AGM notification

If you haven't received a copy of the AGM notification in the post, or the email below which I sent to all/most members this morning, then please contact me ASAP.

O.K. Only about three weeks late, although I hope that most of you have already seen the attached notification on the blog: http://kingstonphoenix.blogspot.com/2009/11/2009-agm-notification.html - but I know that some people can't see the blog.

This has all got a bit messy as I have sent paper copies of the notification to those without email, as well as to one or two new members and Eric, who doesn't seem to be receiving emails from me! Plus I am missing real addresses for some people!!!!

So full notification attached (to the email, not this blog post!), but in brief here:

AGM 3rd December 2009 at the clubroom - Worcester Park Athletic Club, Green Lane, Worcester Park, Surrey - commencing at 8pm. We have booked the room down by the kitchen.
Plan is to follow the meeting with an American supper.

I have already received one motion, and a nomination for the vacant committee place.

The plan is to send out the "paperwork" early next week. If you have already received a paper copy of the notification you will automatically receive an envelope with the paperwork in (Post Office willing, of course).

Everyone else will receive the paperwork by email - which hopefully will include a list of all current email addresses in with the members/address list, and mobile numbers as well.

If you would ALSO like a paper copy sent, then please respond to the email asking for it and I will add you to the address labels.

A number of members have @ kprc.org.uk email addresses (there are some still available if you anyone else wants). Where I have any doubt about it pointing to the correct place I have copied this message to your REAL email address as well, so you should receive this message twice. Others I have work/home email addresses for and have used both.

Can everyone please reply indicating receipt of this message and indicating which is your preferred email address (home or work, or even both) and I will work with Frank to make that the basis of his email list for next season.

Finally as of 1st November the 2010 subscriptions are due, if you are coming to the AGM bring your £15 or your cheque book and Pete will send you home with your membership card. Otherwise see Pete or cheques payable to "Kingston Phoenix Road Club" and sent to him.

Cheers,
Lisa

An afternoon with Vin Denson

An afternoon with Vin Denson

Leigh village hall – 2pm Saturday 9 January 2010

Come and listen to one of cycling’s heros – Vin Denson.

Born in Chester, he chanced his arm and moved abroad back in the early 60s to start a sparkling professional career.

It was a huge gamble in those days, a big step into the unknown.

With just £200 in his pocket, the proceeds of selling off his furniture and other belongings, Vin and his suitcases arrived in Paris by train in April 1962. He was joining battle with just one complete bike and two spare pairs of wheel.

But he wasn’t alone as alongside him, and a partner in this overseas venture, was his wife Vi, as well as a little more…. Vi was already expecting their first child.

Vin might have been big in the UK but out there it was still all to do.

Living out of a room in Troyes, he was to kick off his career as a rider for one of the city’s two racing clubs.

But Vin was a strong rouleur and possessed a prowess that soon got him noticed.

He quickly climbed up the ladder and reached the top rung, receiving the call to join the top team of the day, Ford France, where the leader was Jacques Anquetil, the first man to win the Tour de France five times.

Jacques was very fair with his domestiques: quick to thank them for their hard work on the bike and quick to pay them their fair dues.

Vin’s record as the only British rider to win a stage of the Giro d’Italia stood for more than 20 years.

He also won the Tour of Luxembourg, following in the footsteps of Louison Bobet and Charly Gaul.

This extract from Vin’s book might whet your whistle….

His way to win a race was by being strong and riding so hard that “you wear the others down and then you beat them to the line”.

Vin adds: “There are other ways of doing it, of course. People talk about how this or that sprinter can finish like a rocket, shooting out of the bunch in the last 200 metres to snatch the victory.

“But I have never really respected sprinters. I admire the way they can kick out such terrific speed, but sprinters are often lazy, conceited, temperamental and introverted, whereas the real rouleurs, climbers and plain common grafters are generally more friendly, outgoing and relaxed.”

So if you want to hear someone who has all of those qualities – friendly, outgoing and relaxed – come and join us and hear more from the man himself.

Time: 2pm
Date: Saturday 9 January 2010
Venue: Leigh village hall in Surrey
Tickets: £6 in advance (or £8 on the day)
Contact: John Leitch 01737 84 36 01 or johnleitch65@googlemail.com

Plan: Vin’s talk will run for around 60- 80 mins
After a break for a cup of tea there will be a further 30- 40min for questions
Book signing: Vin has published his story in a book entitled 'The Full Cycle'. Copies will be on sale.

Youngsters: 20 free places available to riders aged 5-16 who are members of a club affiliated to the Surrey Cycle Racing League

Where is Leigh? On the main A25 road between Dorking and Reigate… take the road south at the roundabout at the mid-point…. it is signposted for Betchworth.

Next Committee Meeting

Next Committee Meeting to be Friday November 20th 2009 provisionally at Brian's in Ewell.

Can everyone make a 7pm start?
as I think we have a few extra things to discuss.
Let me know if you can't and we can either start without you or I can let everyone else know that it won't be 7pm!

Can all the officers either bring their AGM reports or - preferably - have emailed them to me by then...

We have a long list of club event results to skim through, which I will try to get written down before the meeting, to save time.
There is at least one proposition for the AGM in the works at the moment.
There will be the CTT National agenda to discuss.
There are at least two recent applicants and possibly another one or two who have not been rubber stamped yet - must check!
Club Dinner 2010.

And no doubt some other stuff too.

Eric - message part 2

Eric,

Thanks, application form received - welcome to the Phoenix.

Message for Eric

Eric,

You said you read the blog, so this seems to be almost the only way of communicating!

I have received all three of your messages over the last few weeks and replied to all three of them, the first two replies had an attachment, which I didn't bother with this last time in case that has a bearing on the problem. My email is sent from a Yahoo account, is your ISP blocking emails from such a source? Or have they been sent to a "junk" folder for you?

I am not aware of other emails not being received by other people that I correspond with, although if they don't know I've sent a message they wouldn't know it hadn't been received! Some of the messages I have sent recently have been replied to, so obviously they have been received.

If I manage to plonk the application form online somewhere in the near future, I'll link to it from this post, otherwise Pete will put a paper copy through your door on Thursday on his way somewhere.

Cheers,
Lisa

George Crouch Memorial: Steve Hillier + 7:12
Tudor Cup: Jake Dodd 1:07:23

I guess that pretty much wraps up the trophy winners for 2009 - it's not 100% cut and dried till after the last event, but with only 10s, 25s and Hill Climbs remaining, there shouldn't be much change - if any!

Lisa

P.S. errors and omissions expected - Frank, I think it's all online so you can check against your calculations...

VTTA 25

October 4th 2009 - H25/2, Marlow ski-slope course.

It's been a quiet year with only one or two riders in any given open event, and almost all the nominated "Open-as-club events" haven't qualified as club events this year as the minimum five riders have not entered.

So....

A sudden surge of late-season interest saw five Phoenix members entered in the VTTA 25 on the H25/2 this morning for a rather leisurely 8am start - not that a 6am wake-up call wasn't in order for some to get there. A pleasantly still and cool-to-warm autumn morning greeted the riders - none of the river mist that we get here sometimes - and the trip proved worthwhile for all five riders, with all doing season's bests and 3 pbing.

Stuart 57:21 pb (was 1:0:32)
Ben 1:00:28 pb (was 1:4:20)
Steve 1:05:40 pb (was 1:6:06)
Jake 1:07:23 (from a 1:9:58 this year, done in May)
Grant 1:16:24 (bettering the 1:16:56 done last month)

Fastest was Nik Bowdler (Farnborough and Camberley CC) - this year's BBAR Champion - in 52:35.

Congratulations to all!

The Mitchell clan fox yet another handicapper! (Lisa did this event, as Brian can hardly handicap an event without knowing what the hcp times are!)
And - we had just about got the hang of the way the points are awarded for this event ie "the points for the points trophy mirror the points for the handicap trophy" - not any more, now we have a men's and women's points trophy you dish out the hcp points, then remove Jake from the points and each of the men move up one.

Got it? I thought not... Anyway, it's corrected above compared to the emailed result sheet. (Sorry, Frank)

This event is a handicap event. Club events points are awarded based on handicap position for the event, and not scratch position. The handicap is sealed so that riders do not know who they have to catch or hold off in order to beat them on handicap.

What can Steve do next?

Whilst the season is winding up for the Phoenix Club Events, and September sees the end of the National BBAR (British Best All Rounder competition - see here), the racing season doesn't really draw to an end until the end of October. October is the month of Hill Climbs, but there are still a number of standard distance TTs to be ridden.

The H25/8 course is on the A31 between Farnham and Alton.

View H25/8 course in a larger map

And the H25/2 is out near me on the A404/A4 just west of Maidenhead. This is the fabled "ski slope course" (well round here - there's another one in Wales).

View H25/2 course in a larger map

There are two more events left on the H25/8 and two on the H25/2 this season, although both courses are being used on the same day on one weekend, which limits your choices. The first H25/8 event is on 19th September, which means that you need to get your entry to Basingstoke by 6pm tomorrow evening (unlikely).
The on October 4th there is an event on the H25/2 at 07:30 and the H25/8 at 10:00. The H25/8 event has an early closing date of September 15th (the usual 6pm) so they are anticipating a full field, with the H25/2 effectively being an overflow event, with the usual closing date.
The following week, October 11th is just the H25/2.
Or there is the Epsom 25 on the "club" course, the G25/53 that we know and love! - on the 27th September.

All depends on how tenacious you are feeling. Personally I think you have been improving enough that beating your best ever is on the cards (after all Jake did it in the 10 the other week), but whether you want to go for it this year is another matter.

It doesn't seem right to me that when you have earned the improvement on last year the way you have this year that the Crouch Trophy should then go to someone like Mark or I who are so erratic with our times from year to year that a large improvement is not really an achievement. No disrespect to Mark here, but after all he has improved from a 1:26 last year, which is a lot easier than the improvement you have made.

If you haven't got a handbook you need to talk to Frank or Jake, or someone else with a handbook who can give you the entry details for the above events.

Good Luck if you decide to go for it.

Lisa

P.S. I am having an argument with Google Maps at the moment, but if you enlarge the 2nd map and then click on the "start" pin on the left, it takes you to the correct place.

Reply from Steve

Oh Mark what have you done - a fantastic ride !!! Well done and I must admit that I have been spoilt with the almost perfect conditions I had when I did my only 25 this season.

H25/2 you say Lisa - or the H25/8 on a Saturday afternoon? - I don't know what and where these courses are... they are just secret codes to me.

So the gauntlet has been thrown and to beat Mark I would have to beat my lifetime best (1:06:06). It can be done - if only I had been training for 25's all season!!

Oh dear... and if I don't have a go this season I would probably have to get under the hour next year to get the trophy back. That sounds like a lot of work, a ski slope course and a new bike - with a propellor on the back!

Any advice anyone?

Steve - going down the pub to drown my sorrows :-(

So the competition for the various trophies is hotting up: on the face of it, Mark has just stolen the George Crouch (improvement) Trophy from Steve, with Steve now needing a 1-6-02 or better to reverse the positions which is a shame as Steve's improvements this year are really worthy of the trophy. H25/2 Steve?
George Crouch Trophy

Nick currently holds on t0 the lead in the Handicap tables with 55 points. Jake is hot on his heels with 52 points and Steve with 48 points. With a possible 14 points available from the remaining two counting club events 4th placed Brian could only match Nick's 55 points from his current 41 points, but both Jake and Steve are real competition.
Handicap table

The Men's Club Events Points Trophy is also a close run thing between John and Brian - Simon is up there in third place with 21 points still to play for, but I think that his season might already have finished - certainly he won't be riding the Hilly 12/Hill Climb, which throws away a lot of potential points. John currently leads with 70 points having extended his lead by 1 today over Brian who is now on 66 points. My guess is that (assuming they both ride) they could come out of the Hilly 12/Hill Climb with no change to the gap leaving the slight lottery of the Consolation to finalise the trophy. I say "slight lottery" because the points for this trophy are based on handicap placings in that event, not scratch placings.
Men's Club Events Points table

Women's Club Events Points Trophy has already been won by Jake.

Finally: thanks to Mike and Ray for fulfilling our marshalling commitments to the SCCU at the 25 this morning, I haven't heard whether either of them ended up with a job or if they just had to turn up and be available as spare marshalls.

Mont Ventoux

Maggie and I have had a very good week in Provence on a CTC holiday led by Chris Ellison. A number of people have spoken well of it, and we can certainly endorse their recommendation. The holiday is based at Buis les Baronnies which is in the middle of some very good cycling country - quiet roads, good climbs and good company.

Climbing Mont Ventoux was undoubtedly the highlight of the week - despite its fearsome reputation it's actually not too bad if you take it steadily, though the wind at the top really was something. One of the few places where the weight of a tandem is an advantage.

Stats for the week (all in statute measure - this was a CTC holiday) were 263.88 miles, 21,277.7 ft of ascent and a highest speed of 44.1 mph - faster than we've ever gone on the Holmwood course ...

ECCA 12hr provisional result

For the first time in the 5 years I have been riding this event we had no rain whatsoever in the 12 hours. In fact we had brilliant sunshine the whole time and a very warm, dry Southerly wind (great for the long barrow that Frank was timing but horrible for us). Various folks out on the day have reported that their cars showed the temp as 28 or 29 degrees.

Despite all that, we managed:

Brian 213
Jake 207
Lisa 155
(with a very long sit down in the shade on the finishing circuit!)

Mike Levett (Lewes Wanderers) who has been riding the evening 10s did 206.

In other news for the weekend, John did 1:1:54 in the North Hants 25 on Saturday and 28:45 in the Richmond Park TT on Sunday where Tony T was DNF.

Frank reports that the Tandem Trike did 272 for 12 hours beating their own record by approx 10 miles, and were still on course late last night to beat the London Edinburgh record (though don't know yet if they managed it) they weren't expected to continue for the 24.

Lisa

Update: 12:15 Monday.
It's not fair, is it? Today would have been much better for the 12 with the wind much less, and more cloud cover giving us more shade and lower temps. The wind direction doesn't matter so much, so today would have been much better conditions. A lot of the field didn't finish the event, which I guess was down to the hot day.

Thanks to Ron, Doreen & Rosemary - chiefly helping Brian - and Simon & Jen helping Jake, for the assistance (especially sponges) to all three of us. And of course thanks to Pete for helping me, I couldn't have done it without him (even if it did take only 4hrs 20mins for me to start swearing at him - I was hungry and hadn't seen him for over an hour!!!)

Finally the report on the Long Barrow is successful attempts at 12hrs (270ish) and London-Edinburgh (19hrs 15 - approx 2 hours off old record) and the 24 abandoned. At 8am this morning Frank was in a bed somewhere......!

RRA London-Edinburgh attempt

Ralph Dadswell and Paul Mace are attempting the London-Edinburgh RRA record tomorrow, and scheduling for the 12 hour and 24 hour records in addition.

Our own Frank Cubis will be timing them for the entire attempt.

The schedule can be found at http://www.dadswell.co.uk and it is hoped that updates on their progress will be available on the Time Trialling Forum at http://www.timetriallingforum.co.uk

Think of Frank when you go to bed tomorrow night, he won't be back to his before Monday night - although at least he doesn't have to do all the driving!

Alpine Passes

I've just got back from an enjoyable few days cycling in the Alps with my two sons. Our purposes were rather different - I wanted to cross some passes, revisiting old favourites and adding on a couple of new ones; they wanted high altitude training for a savage triathlon that they're doing in Norway next week. That means big mileages and big climbs. With me, it's one or the other these days, but with a bit of planning we were able to meet everyone's needs. We rode separately, but had lunch together every day, shook hands on some big passes and generally had a very good time.

We chose passes that the Tour de France has been over, either this year or in the last couple. This gives good atmosphere, with the 'Go Wiggo' graffiti on the roads, and real humility when you compare the times of the Tour riders with your own. My passes were Petit St Bernard, Cormet de Roselend, Col des Saisies, Alpe d'Huez, and a double crossing of the Galibier, going Lauteret-Galibier-Telegraphe-Galibier-Lauteret. I've done each side before but the double was a treat.

Here's the team at the top of the Alpe d'Huez. It was a very hot afternoon - about 34 degrees at the bottom, probably more part way up. I attributed my rather pedestrian time to this, until I found that Henry (he's the Bianchi one) had taken more than ten minutes off his personal best. So, just like Lance Armstrong on the podium in Paris last week, you can see that the chap in third place has the wistful look of one who realises that his best times are behind him, and that it's downhill from here.

My ride reports wouldn't be complete without maps, so here are a couple - the Galibier and the Alpe d'Huez. The week's stats are 221.84 km; 6506.9 metres of ascent with a moving average of 13.62 kph. This last of course, is a balance of going up very slowly but down very fast.... Mark

RRA attempt

Robecca Romero and James Cracknell have scheduled an RRA attempt on the Lands End to John O'Groats mixed tandem record. Further details can be found on the RRA website: http://www.rra.org.uk/ look under "notices" for the original schedule (PDF format) and an updated one.

They aim to start on Monday 3rd August at 5am from Lands End.

There is a story in the telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/active/5940583/James-Cracknell-Lands-End-to-John-OGroats-cycle-record-aim-with-Rebecca-Romero.html

Finally there is a Google map of the route, on which we might be able to follow their progress:

Time Trials in Richmond Park

London Dynamo are promoting two "come and try it" Time Trials in Richmond Park on Sunday the 9th August and Sunday 23rd August. Distance is 10.4m and the course will be tough.

These are not restricted to novice riders, so if you fancy a genuine TT in Richmond Park, details are on the CTT website. Direct link click here

Looks like the usual max field of 120 riders, but not sure how it will be played if the events are over-subscribed, or even if that is likely! (Just found it: first come, first served, like most club events.)

If successful this could lead to a series of events next year.

Anerley 50 - marshalls required

I am looking for help in marshalling the Anerley 50 on the 9th August. As you know the Anerley provide the other counting 50 in the Counties BAR and we usually provide some marshals to assist them. Over the last couple of years we have sadly lost some of the marshals who have helped and it has left us very short.
Bryn would be most appreciative of any help as the number of marshals required probably exceeds the total Anerley active membership.
If you can help can you let me know as soon as possible?

All the best,
Tony

(SCCU Secretary)

Let me know in the first instance - ASAP - it is the same overall marshalling requirement as for the SCCU 50 which I ran in June.

Tour de France Info

For anyone interested in further information on the Tour de France, the official website lists the full classifications for each stage and overall, including such gems (that the ITV4 coverage missed) that Bradley Wiggins was the man wearing the Green Jersey on stage 2, yesterday. Cancellara was the man who should have worn it by right, but he was in Yellow and the next man in line was Contador who was in the Mountains Jersey leaving Brad to sport the Green!

Both the Tour de France site and Cyclingnews.com offer live text commentary of the race online during the stages for anyone unable to watch the stages live.

As usual, thanks to Ron & Doreen for providing teas after, and also to the various folks who have been donating something to eat with the tea.

I also think thanks are in order to the Epsom CC for allowing us to piggy-back our event with their signs.

Kingston to Worthing - route info 2

Not a pretty post here, but if you click each of the links there is a detailed image of our route, I was surprised by how much to the west the route actually goes:

Fanal pics on K > Worthing mjm

Andrew was also flying and as I panned him with camera he went from shade to light so quick the sun came into view from behond the tree leaving Andrew looking like he was in a Fog and I nearly "Mist" him!
After leaving Worthing, I drove to Hove parked the car and biked it to Lon/Bri finish where I met Tim for a beach bum lunch. These are the appropriate cards I got from my wild kids who I love to bits. I leave you all to guess which one is from who, Ness, Nat & Tim in order of their age!

As I final note I would like to congratulate Stuart Pearce for fastest ride, some 2 to 3mins outside Gary Dodds record set some years ago? Also Congrats to Michael Stains (ex SRCC) in his comeback year that was a fine ride and almost beat Stuart!
I have more photo's but I think you now have more than enough from me!! Frank put me down for 2010, that might finally be my "come-back" year!!
