Ann's 24hr Result

Ann has just phoned to let me know that the organisation have been in touch and she has been given a distance of 319.99m for the event.

That works out as a VTTA National and Surrey/Sussex Group Record for age 62.

I rather assume that it will be at least a Club Age Record as well, but need to go out now so will check and confirm in due course.

Congratulations, Ann!

Club Results and Tables

OK, I think that's everything up to date at the moment (until you all revise your 10 times tonight!).

Errors and omissions expected - I know that I need to look up course info and winners for some of the events on the "all rides" list.

Right, must leave for the 10 now...

Jean Steel

Jean Carlo, widow of past member Len Steel died on Monday 13th June 2011.

She suffered a massive stroke on the previous Friday - which came after a lesser but debilitating stroke some six months ago - and failed to recover.

There is to be a short service at Langney Crematorium, near Eastbourne, on Thursday, 23.06.11 at 11:15.
No flowers but donations can be made to:
Stroke Association via Heathfield Funeral Services,
1 Holmbrook,
Hailsham Road,
Heathfield,
TN21 8AE.

I am not sure if Jean was ever a Phoenix member in her own right, but was associated with us for many years via Len.
Following Len's death in 2008, Jean married the widowed Gerry Carlo who had been a member of the Cheam & Morden Section with them back in the 50's.

I think we might have an ancient pic or two somewhere and will try to look something out when I get back this evening.

The Road Under The Sea

On our way to Dieppe, Maggie and I spent a few days on the West Coast of France. It's mostly very flat, intricate byways amongst salt-marshes. Easy riding but enjoyable. One of the rides we did was to cross the Passage du Gois, a road that joins the island of Noirmoutier to the mainland.

It's a very ancient road, not surfaced until the 1930s, and it is only passable for about three hours each tide. The rest of the time it's under the sea - about ten feet under at high tide. There are towers you can climb to wait if you misjudge it, but it would be quite a long wait, and your car wouldn't be much use afterwards.

From a cycling point of view, the interest is that the Tour de France starts there on the 2nd July. It has crossed the Gois once before, in 1999, when the Swiss favourite Alex Zülle crashed on the slippery Gois and lost forty seconds. He never recovered this time, and came second to a young American called Armstrong, taking his first Tour win. The rest, as they say, is history.

Phoenix BBQ

Well that was wet!!! Put out all the cushions lit the BBQ then the heavens opened! Rushed around putting up makeshift covers over barbie, everyone except cookers went indoors, all the cushions got soaked. Eased up after 2 hours but very cold and dark! what a shame, not many people came so lots of food left over. Big tidy up today, trying to dry out everything. Mel might have taken a photo?
